By adhering to a stringent Code of Practice they are licensed to use the Lion Quality mark on pack. Since its launch in the late 1990s, the Lion Quality mark on shell eggs has played a fundamental part in reassuring consumers that British eggs are the safest in the world. The mark guarantees production to significantly higher standards of hygiene and animal welfare than required by UK or EU law, complete traceability, a best-before date on the egg shell and compulsory vaccination of the laying flock against salmonella.
BEPA members use Lion Quality eggs to produce a wide range of products. Members undergo independent auditing which is intrinsically linked to HACCP principles in order to maintain standards. Strict controls are imposed on processing, pasteurisation and packing.
Egg products are used as ingredients by food manufacturers and caterers and are available in liquid, frozen, dried and "value added" forms.
